91. Monarch /ˈmɑnərk/ (n.)

92. Insist /ɪnˈsɪst/ (v.)

93. Tolerate /ˈtɑləret/ (v.)

94. Disobedience /ˌdɪsəˈbidiəns/ (n.)

95. Absolute /ˈæbsəlut/ (adj.)

96. Reasonable /ˈriznəbl/ (adj.)

97. Majesty /ˈmædʒəsti/ (n.)

98. Rebellion /rɪˈbeljən/ (n.)

99. Ambassador /æmˈbæsədər/ (n.)

100. Be habituated to /bi həˈbɪtʃuetɪd tu/ (v. phr.)

101. In accordance with /ɪn əˈkɔrdns wɪð/ (prep. phr.)

102. Take it upon oneself to /tek ɪt əˈpɑn wʌnˈself tu/ (v. phr.)

103. On the brink of /ɑn ðə brɪŋk əv/ (prep. phr.)

104. Hold sway over /hold swe ˈovər/ (v. phr.)

在國王討論他的命令時,出現了類似「He demanded that everyone obey him.」(他要求每個人都服從他)的結構。

(Conditional Sentences)

國王曾說:「If I were to order a general to turn into a seagull, and if the general did not obey, it would be my fault.」(如果我命令一個將軍變成海鳥,而他沒有服從,那會是我的錯。)

這裡使用了「If + 主詞 + were to + 原形動詞」的句型。

(Relative Clauses)

例如「His ermine cloak, which covered the entire planet...」(他的貂皮大衣,蓋住了整個星球……)。

Puffed /pʌft/ (adj.)

Sovereign /`sɑvrɪn/ (n.)

“Real nourishment comes from the small choices you make every day.”

"To be or not to be, that is the question."

"To be or not to be, that is the question."

1️⃣ 強調 "TO BE"

"TO BE or not to be, that is the question."

2️⃣ 強調 "OR"

"To be OR not to be, that is the question."

3️⃣ 強調 "NOT"

"To be or NOT to be, that is the question."

4️⃣ 強調 "THAT"

"To be or not to be, THAT is the question."

5️⃣ 強調 "IS"

"To be or not to be, that IS the question."

"To be or not to be, that is the QUESTION."

AI and Truth: Challenges and Countermeasures

                                #Prodia

The difference between current AI large language models—so-called things like ChatGPT and GPT-4—is that their goal is truthiness, not truth.

They are more like historical fiction writers than historians.

We're different in that we take truth seriously—maybe because we want to lie.

But LLMs (AIs) don’t yet really have the capacity to lie on purpose.

They do formulate falsehoods that they then spread, and there’s only a difference of degree between us and them.

So, we’re not used to having our technology in a position to ignore the truth and just feed us what makes sense to them.

Technology has gone to great lengths to make it very hard to counterfeit money and quite easy to identify it.

So, we can do something similar for every phone, computer, and tablet.

Every digital device can have software put in it, which will do a pretty darn good job of detecting counterfeit people.

It will not accept them or will brand it instantly: "This is fake. This is a hoax. Don't believe it."

And in order to do that well, you have to have laws.

And in order to have laws, you’ve got to have governments and legislators that will pass the laws.

And they have to know enough about what they're doing so they pass laws that aren't easily circumvented.

This is something we have to work on now, and I think we need to work on it.

My Eye-Opening Realization About Memes After Reading The Selfish Gene

One of the most eye-opening moments for me was when I read Richard Dawkins' book The Selfish Gene and learned about his concept of memes.

---

When Dawkins coined the term memes, he had in mind something very general. The term caught on and is in the dictionary now, but only a small subset of memes are what most people think of—those that people deliberately and intelligently design with the hope that they'll go viral.

And some of them do.

But lots of memes go viral that don't involve the internet at all.

                             #ChatGPT

Words are memes.

Every word in every language is a meme—it's not genetically inherited; it's culturally transmitted. They evolve over time.

Dawkins' theory was a very general theory of how human cultural evolution hugely expands the powers of the human brain.

---

In fact, I would put it very strongly: the difference between a chimpanzee and a human brain is that the brain of a chimpanzee is largely unfurnished, whereas we fill our brains with memes.

We download hundreds of thousands of memes, and that's where we get our power from.

Your computer or your phone isn't a very powerful device until you download some apps to it—those are like memes.

---

We are awash in toxic memes right now.

其中,我認為最具破壞力的一個——因為它會催生許多其他有害迷因——就是「真相不重要(truth doesn't matter)」的觀念,也就是「真相只是相對的(truth is just relative)」,甚至「根本沒有任何可證實的真相(there's no such thing as establishing the truth of anything)」。

One of the most toxic, I think—because it enables so many others—is the idea that truth doesn't matter, that truth is just relative, that there's no such thing as establishing the truth of anything.

"Your truth, my truth—we're all entitled to our own truths."

That's pernicious. It's attractive to many people, and it is used to exploit people in all sorts of nefarious ways.

The truth really does matter.

---

I think one of my best ideas is the intentional stance—the idea that we automatically adopt the strategy of treating anything complicated and interesting, if we can, as an agent.

"What does it want? What does it know? What does it believe?"

We use the intentional stance all the time to endow things that move and behave in complicated ways with beliefs, desires, and the ability to act rationally given those beliefs and desires.

That’s fine when we're living in a world of concrete objects. But now, AI is filling the digital world with fake intentional systems—fake minds, fake people—that we are almost irresistibly drawn to treat as if they were real, as if they really had beliefs and desires.

---

These will be very dangerous memes indeed because they will replicate, they will evolve, and we won’t be able to take our attention away from them.

They will capture our attention—and manipulate us.

Magic, Philosophy, and the Responsibility of Explanation

他們其實並沒有真的把那位女士鋸成兩半,他們只是讓它看起來像是這麼回事 (make it appear that they're sawing the lady)。」

(Oh, that's not my department. That's somebody else's job.)

他們不想被打擾 (they just don’t want to be bothered),也不願承擔解釋現象的責任 (take on the responsibility to explain what's actually happening)。

但我喜歡做的事,是去解釋事物的運作方式 (explain things and have them explained to me)。解釋通常圍繞著「事物是如何運作的」、「為何會如此發生 」(how things work and why they happen the way they do)。因此,我一直對哲學家如何形成他們的觀點,以及科學家如何在提問時犯錯 (how scientists make mistakes when they frame their own questions) 感到好奇。

Philosophy and the Art of Asking Questions

(Philosophy is better at questions than at answers)。」

很多哲學家並不認為了解事物如何實際運作是他們的工作 (they don’t think it’s their job to understand how things actually work),但我認為這應該正是哲學家的責任 (that should be the job of philosophers)。

Curiosity About the World and Learning from Science

自小我就想知道事物如何運作 (how things worked),喜歡拆開它們來看看內部構造 (take them apart and see what made them tick)。

我認為,哲學應該致力於弄清楚概念如何運作,以及為何如此 (figure out what makes ideas work and why)。

(If you’re going to be a philosopher, learn about the world. Learn about the science.)

值得高興的是,現在的哲學家比我當年受過的科學訓練更深入 (scientifically trained way beyond what I ever was),而且科學家開始認真看待哲學家的意見 (they’re being taken seriously by the scientists)。

(Scientists are just as capable of making philosophical mistakes or getting into philosophical confusions as any laypeople)。如果科學家想要澄清問題、提出更好的問題 (clarify those questions and ask better questions),他們就需要具備科學知識的哲學家 (the help of informed philosophers)。

Challenging Philosophical Thinking

我很高興我的批評遭到強烈抵抗 (my criticisms are resisted so resolutely and ferociously),因為如果沒有人反對,我們就無法接近真相 (get at the truth)。

(What if I’m wrong?)

(What happens when your arm goes asleep, and you can't control it?)」

(Is it the nerves? Do they get pinched? Is it blood flow? What is it?)」

當時,很多哲學系的同學覺得我很奇怪,竟然對這樣的生理機制問題感興趣 (interested in the physiological questions of what was going on),他們甚至認為我正在背棄哲學 (abandoning philosophy)。

How Evolution Shapes Philosophy and Cognition

(This is the great key to how things fit together!)

如果我們理解了自然如何以驚人的方式讓我們理解事物、創造事物、思考未來 (how amazingly intricate and wonderful and ingenious nature is in allowing us to understand things and create things and think ahead),我們就能拋棄那些充滿魔法色彩的錯誤觀念 (dismiss the magical ideas out of hand)。

(Darwin’s ideas undo many of the biggest problems in philosophy)。

(Nothing of any interest has an essence. It’s gradualism all the way.)

然而,許多哲學家仍然執著於亞里斯多德式的思維,試圖先定義事物的本質 (define the essence of each thing, as Aristotle would put it)。

(Forget about essences. Learn about all the variation in the details)
